Teddy Faley Interview!

Teddy Faley is an emerging Mc and producer from Baltimore, Maryland. He released his first free Ep, Apple Juice, last year, and we were the firsts to review it and promote it. Now we are back with an interview to this amazing artist!

- Briefly introduce yourself to our followers

Hi. My name's Teddy Faley, my phone number is 443-285-3490, and I'm the Mike Jones of this indie hip hop shit.

- First, how did you approach to the world of Hip-Hop?

Um, as best as I can remember it was just rhyming for fun with my friends that initially got me started. Probably around 1999. Just freestyling while we smoked herb and whatnot. Eventually I macgyver-rigged a mic to my old pc and started playing with recording my own tracks. Hooked up with some good people over the years, and now I don't suck as much as I used to.

-How important is music in your life?

I wouldn't know who I was if i didn't make music. It's what makes my life acceptable, to me at least. I don't know how people get by without an outlet like that. It helps me feel interesting to myself. Or something. And I am constantly floored when anybody takes an interest in my music, that has never gotten old or become routine to me, and I hope it never will.

- What are the situations in which you find writing songs easier to yourself? And where do you get the inspiration?

I tend to get the first few lines of any song while I'm busy with something else. when driving or showering or whatever. Then I'll write the rest once i get to my studio. I tend to get inspired by musicians. People I know personally more often than not, Cubbiebear, Oz, etc. recently I've been listening to some old pearl jam, that always puts a pen in my hand.

- What are the things that mainly affect your music?

whatever effects me personally,i guess. I never try to sit and write about anything in particular anymore, it tends to be structured a bit more naturally, or said better when i don't plan out what I'm putting on paper. what it usually end up being about is whatever happens to be interesting me at the time, or pissing me off. A lot of Apple Juice ended up being about my opinions of other people. Fairly judgemental shit. I didn't plan that out, it just turned out that way. I think that was due to me starting to believe that maybe I'm NOT crazy, and maybe most other people are. While previous releases had that concept kinda flipped, which reflected how I felt back then.

Now let's talk about your projects and your music

- One of your most important projects is the "Juice" EP's project, what do the eps of this series have in common? Is there a connection between the different "episodes"?

The Apple Juice record started as as a promotional idea actually. Cubbie and I were brainstorming ideas back and forth about how to boost attendance at his record release show, and thought it was a good idea to release some new material to bundle with pre-sale tickets. I had a bunch of unreleased songs laying around, and a few songs that were almost done, and that became Apple Juice. After getting a bunch out I started getting really good feedback on it so I upped the worth of the record in my own head and started pushing it as an actual release. It's been quite good to me, the response has been awesome. My idea since then has been to release "Juice" e.p.'s whenever I can, being that nobody buys music anyways so the best way to get my name out is to just give out a solid project for free. I'm so wishy washy though so I don't know if I will ever put out anymore Juice records. Or If EVERYTHING I put out will be a Juice record. Or an Apple record. It takes me 4 hours to figure out what socks to wear in the morning. So no, there's no connection besides whatever connection is naturally there by writing and working in whatever head space I happen to be in during the making of the record.

- Soon will come out You Can't Unchop Trees, Dropouts Inc.'s, which is a duo formed by you and the producer Joe Shaffer, debut album. Explain us the title and tell us about this record.

Drop Outs has been an awesome project for me. It is the first and last concept record I will ever do. It was originally going to be about drug abuse, but a few songs in I asked Joe if he minded if I write about my teenage years in general. That's where it got fun. Everything that makes me the way I am today happened between the ages of 16-21. I've always wanted to write about those times, well, I DO always write about those times but I beat around the bush so much with metaphors and imagery and shit that the songs don't do justice to what actually happened, Like, Spring Cleaning is a good song or whatever, but why? Like, why do I feel like that? Everything is an equal sign, I've never written the addition that added up to these songs. That's what Drop Outs is, it's what happened. Not nearly as much hiding behind metaphors, more straight narratives. I'm sure there will be some people that won't dig it because of that, but whatever. The title comes from a line in one of the songs, "Staircase". It's a song that describes the sharp turn in values that I went through towards the end. "I learned to flood the leaks cause they ain't want to believe/ I'm like "Fine, you can't un-chop trees.". It kind of embodies what the whole record is about, when you learn to live off of destroying things it's only a matter of time until you do something so horrible, or something happens that is so horrible, that you can never take it back. I showed them I can chop trees down, yay for me. Now I have to live with this downed tree for the rest of my life.

- Are you planning to release a solo full lenght album?

No. I mean, I will, I'm sure. I just have no plans for one at the moment. After DropOuts is done I'm gonna get working on some songs for the next Juice record, we'll see where they wind up. There will be something new by the end of the summer one way or the other.

- Apple Juice is a very heterogeneous EP. If we compare any track from your debut EP with one of your older songs -such as the beautiful Butterfly Wings- we immediately notice a great improvement in songwriting and song structuring. What made this improvement possible?

I stopped making beats for a while, at least beats that I would use myself. Between the time I recorded Butterfly Wings and the time I started making Apple Juice I really hadn't made any of my own beats. I made "Darwin Complex" by accident really and became inspired to produce my own stuff again. I think learning to write to other peoples structure gets you out of your own self imposed rules of writing and such. So in recording to other peoples music, I got a lot more comfortable with trusting my instincts in terms of where the verses should go. In all honesty though, its probably not that deep, and i just wanted to do something different from the verse/hook/verse/hook. I trust my muse now.

- One of the thing that is easy to notice in your music is the absence of chorus and the sudden changes of rhythm, what led you to these choices?

In terms of the absence of chorus, I don't really plan that stuff out. I'm not real big on committing myself to a certain structure. But if a hook seems warranted, like if I feel a hook as I'm writing, then I'll run with it. "Been Had Been" has a hook, I just felt that type of cadence at the end of the jam. The change of rhythm is more of a learned style i guess. Cubbie was an influence in terms of me trusting my own inclination towards the more "erratic" sounds. I had always leaned in that direction in my early days, but when i was with Brakefast Records, I put a certain pressure on myself to not let my sound wander too far from the main road. Nowadays it's almost like the farther i push it, the more my main group of listeners dig it.

- Recently you've made a song with a member of our staff: dMC. The result of the collaboration is a wonderful track, dark and noisy: The Fog, which will feature on dMC's album Electronapoli. What brought you to make a song with him? Will we see other coollaborations with him in the future? What can people that live in two diffrent sides of the globe have in common?

Yeah, i like that jam, I had fun doing it. He asked me to put vocals on a track of his. He sent me a few different instrumentals, the beat for "The Fog" brought the writing out. We have talked about doing more songs together, but at the moment I have an enormous amount of music that I have to finish so it's going to be a while. In time we will. In terms of what we could have in common, I couldn't tell you. That's kinda whats cool about making music now, he sends me a beat, i write, boom- song done. We have a 4/4 drum pattern in common, and that's all we need. - You're also a good producer, what are your main inspirations when you produce? Have you ever thought to concentrate on an instrumental record? Well thank you very much. My lyrics are the main inspiration. I tend to write and record before i have made a beat. Usually to a looping guitar/piano/instrumental. Then after I record I'll make a beat around the vocals. I haven't thought about an instrumental record recently, I did one many years ago, but nowadays I like to concentrate on entire songs, vocals and all. Maybe one day I will.

- How much does the beat influence the subject of the lyrics?

Haha, I think I may have accidentally answered this in my previous answer. What I could add is, I tend to enjoy writing to a slower tempo more than faster tempo's. I can play with my cadence more, and focus more on content if I have more room in the beat.

- Is there a song you're most proud of?

Not really, there are definitely songs that mean more to me than others. Spring Cleaning, The Thank You The Sorry, Smile, and a song that hasn't been released yet about visiting my mother in the hospital for the last time all have a special place to me. But those are all important in a selfish sense, they mean a lot to ME, which is cool, but I don't know if that would equate to pride. A lot of the writing on the DropOuts record is important to me as well, as they are all very personal songs, that (I hope) do a pretty good job of painting an accurate picture of how life was for me and my friends back then.

Let's talk a little about the music industry
- You're a member of the indie collective "The Rape", in which there are some artists that are well known in the area of Baltimore. What more can you tell us about "The Rape"?

It's a crew made up of cats from many different aspects of art in general. Whether it be Emcee's, Producers, Photographers, etc.. Started by myself and Cubbiebear a few years ago. It's grown to represent a different attitude in Baltimore hiphop. We have a good time, we don't play gangster, we are blatantly ourselves. We don't echo any of the facets that most believe you have to to be a successful musician in the area, and we are more successful than most of them. We make it OK to pee your pants. Wait, what?

- Have you ever been interested in the European Hip-Hop scene?

To tell you the truth, no. I haven't heard any emcee's that I appreciate from over the pond. I think it's just a matter of not understanding the language, or being able to appreciate the cadance. That's nothing personal, it's just a matter of taste. I'm shallow that way. Except for a fellow I've heard named Spinal, I dig homie's cadence. Producers on the other hand I enjoy just as much as producers I do over here, there is no language barrier when there is no vocals.

- What do you think of the modern Hip-Hop scene? Do you agree with Nas saying Hip-Hop's dead?

Haha, I don't think I have ever agreed with Nas. At least since It Was Written. Of course I don't, he's an idiot. HipHop isn't dead at all, it's just diluted. But if you want to hear some new cats who sound like old Boot Camp Click, you can google that shit and find a thousand dudes who emulate that sound. The same people who bitch about how wack the music is on the radio are the same cats who are too lazy to go and search for some good shit that they would enjoy. Yes, the wack have gotten wacker, but the dope have gotten doper.

- What do you think of the Mainstream scene? Do you think it's all garbage?

Not at all. A lot of it is, yes, but some cats are doing fresh ass new shit. A few years ago Kanye was dropping ill music, so was Jay-z, Clipse. Now you got Lil Wayne doing stuff that nobody has done before, T.I. is making really honest music in a fun, commercial package. I dig it.

- What do you think about blogs like ours? Do you think they can help music to reach a larger amount of people or do you think that they are killing the music industry?

That's a tough question. I think both are true. Without blogs like yours, people wouldn't know about cats like me, so in that sense it's helping immensely. On the other hand, people who can download Cage's new record on your page aren't going to buy it, so it hurts him. BUT, without Internet bootlegging, cage wouldn't be anybody in the first place. So it's tough. I try to use it to my advantage, that's why I try to release all my music for free, I'll get the promo without making people go through the trouble of bootlegging it. And make my money from producing for other artists, studio time, shows. All while trying to get my own shit out there. For me, sites like yours help, but with any luck I'll get to a point where sites like yours hurt me. I'll see you there.

Let's talk a bit about your taste in music

- What are the albums that mainly inspired you and that leaved a trace in your heart and your way of making music (not only Hip-Hop)

Definitely Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus, that record showed me that hiphop could be taken in many directions that nobody had bothered to yet. All the early indie hiphop did as well. Atmosphere, Sage, etc.. Also the late 90's underground - Planet Asia, Punch and Words, Bumpy Knuckles, cats like that. I'm also a big fan of the 90's alternative rock. Pearl Jam, STP and such.

- If you could choose some artists to feature with, who would you choose (Mc's and producers, of course)?

Premier, El-P, Sixtoo, Alchemist, and Just Blaze are a few producers off the top that I would love to get beats from. Most vocal collabs that aren't done out of mutual respect are contrived, so I would look at it cynically. I would work with Jay-z, strictly for the exposure. And cause I could say "I worked with Jay". Which would be awesome.

- Do you take inspirations from other genres? Do you like when people try to tag your music?

Oh yeah, I take inspiration wherever it comes from. And it comes from everywhere. I don't mind if people put me in a box, I think I'm lucky to have people who care enough to put me anywhere at all. They can call my music Lucky Charms Curly Sue Tunes, at least they're calling it something.

- Well, hope you liked the interview, any other things to say? Yeah, I would like to thank you and the whole 187 crew, you guys have been an enormous help over the past year. I really do appreciate the love and support. Also, Sorry for taking so long to do this interview, I tend to avoid talking about myself unless I'm rhyming. Peace homie. DropOuts this spring!

187: Prima di tutto, come ti sei avvicinato all’Hip-Hop?

Perchè mi sento in quel modo? "I learned to flood the leaks cause they ain't want to believe/ I'm like "Fine, you can't un-chop trees.".

TF: Si, mi piace quel pezzo, mi ono divertito a farlo.

Cos'altro puoi dirci su "The Rape"?

Almeno da It Was Written.

Pochi anni fà Kanye stava rilasciando musica pazza, così come Jay-Z o i Clipse.

E faccio soldi producendo altri artisti, lavoro in studio e shows.

"What's good everyone,

For all of you who miss that upper-echelon Ras Kass, Crooked-I, Cali get-robbed-in-the alley music, I wanted to shoot ya'll this new kid named Jay-Fire. Fresh outta So-Cal(Moreno Valley),he just came out with a mixtape under the moniker, Stevie Crooks. The mixtape is called Stevie Crooks presents CSTC and he spits H-A-R-D. True definitive mixtape, Crooks comes with his own material (FirexKrismarz, HYPE&IKES,Breaktime)plus cuts up over grimy instrumentals you've heard before(Shook Ones, The World Is Yours,Stressed Out). Posted a single song below called "Shaolin Style" where he goes over the Shyheim underground banger of the same name. If you like that, download the whole mixtape below. This is for ya'll who miss 95'.

Witness his growth.

Here's the first new leak from the project - the "Think Green" remix featuring Mitchy Slick and Chace Infinite. The original version features Kweli and should will be included on the album as well. The album tracklist is also included below, along with a bit more info on the environemntally conscious aspects of the album (dude's gonna plant a tree for every album sold!). Let me know what you think!

Think Green Album Info:

With Think Green, Agony takes a different approach in his mission, not only to fans of hip-hop, but also to eco-minded individuals. On the album titled track Think Green Phil wastes no time in explaining why it’s important to think of our surroundings as he states “ I print my album on recycled paper so you ain’t gotta cut the rainforest, for me to sing the chorus… ” The Economy rides with the environment as the emcee creates, in his words, an "environmentally conscious hip-hop album" for 2009. Think Green's commercial packing holds true to Phil's vision, with a minimalist 100% recycled, eco-friendly CD sleeve. Phil has even partnered up with the National Global Releaf Program to have a tree planted for every copy of Think Green that is purchased.

peace!
